spring (blog) break

Foto

I normally try to take a break from blogging on Saturdays, but T was playing nicely by himself (despite the third day in a row of no/minimal napping, lord help us all) and I thought I’d take a stab at a few of the drafts I’ve had piled up for a while.

However, be it the weather finally looking inviting, or Rock Lobster being on too loudly, or something else entirely, I seem to be suffering from writers block. I’ve had a number of posts sitting in the back of my head for weeks now, but I just can’t get the words right.

And since I also have family coming to visit on two separate occasions, I think I’ll be taking a week or so off from blogging. Not that I really need to tell you guys (it’s my internet after all), but I felt like being courteous :)

happy new year

2013 and I did not start out on friendly terms. I read everyone else’s hopeful posts about the new year, but I wasn’t feeling it. Mentally, yes, I’m looking forward to what the year has in store for us, but physically I was drained. I spent all of new years day dreading what was coming the next day when Paul went back to work.

Being a stay-at-home-mom is a very rewarding job, and one that I love and don’t ever want to take for granted. But it’s incredibly demanding. T can play well by himself, but when he needs attention, he throws things or pulls on the cat’s tail. I’m supposed to use these situations as teachable moments, otherwise he’ll think that it’s ok to do them.

But every time I sit down and breathe, T is asking me to read him a book, or throwing his toys down the stairs, or pulling Tobias’ fur out and eating it. Before I can talk to him I have to remember how to say whatever it is I want to say in German. Majority of the time he’s run off to destroy something else before I can get anything (German or English) out of my mouth in time. Half the time all I can think is Spanish because Paul’s more consistent than I am.

You can see how one could get so tired. I’m not even going to talk about Paul being out-of-town for the past 4 days or that I had an ongoing cold the entire month.

Instead, I’m choosing February as my beginning to the new year. Let’s forget about January. February is going to be great. For starters, Paul and I are leaving tomorrow for a cruise (don’t ask me where we’re going, it will be warm, so I don’t really care). I’m not the biggest fan of cruises, having been on two before, but honestly, as long as I don’t get sea sick and the food is good I’ll be fine. Having other people cook for me and being able to take a nap whenever I want to sounds amazing!

February is also shorter than January, so even though it will still technically be winter when we return from the cruise, the month will fly by. January dragged on. By the end of February the days will be lighter longer and hopefully it won’t be so cold!

I’ve also decided to do a bit of sprucing up around the blog when I get back. Something a bit cleaner that will withstand the test of time better than pictures from way back when both T and I had much less hair. This place is in definite need of some freshening up!

So, today, I’m raising my glass to February and all it has to offer us as we start 2013. It’s going to be awesome!

February

pause.

Something happened after I finished the marathon last month. My focus changed. Suddenly what was one major component of the blog wasn’t there anymore.

I have only been running a handful of times since the marathon. I’m really torn about it. I love running, so I’m sad not to do it every day. But I have a number of reasons (more like excuses) for why I can’t run as much as I did when I was training. And since I don’t have a race coming up I don’t have as much motivation anymore. I don’t have so much to prove.

Lately, I’ve been feeling like blogging is becoming a chore. I think it’s a combination of not running (and therefore not having running related things to talk about), a variety of projects around the house, and the holidays. I’m trying not to stress out about anything, but I do feel a little stretched. Blogging has definitely been low on my priority list lately.

So, what I’m getting at is that I’ll be taking a step back from the blog for a bit. I’m not sure how long of a pause it will be; maybe just a week, maybe until the end of the holidays. I’m not leaving forever, I just won’t be posting on a daily basis. I’ll still post a memory monday each week and stop in whenever I can.

Thanks for understanding and I’ll see you around!

memory monday: piece of cake

memory monday: our weekly ritual of holding on to the memories we have made today. If you would like to share your own memory you can leave a link in the comments below.

Paul is in California, so I’m solo-parenting until basically Saturday when we join him. What I have discovered after a day of single parenthood is that it was a piece of CAKE when T was 6 months-old. At 11 months, he is more independent and stronger willed, which means he chooses to tell me he’s teething by forcibly sticking his fingers in my mouth and biting my face. A piece of cheese cake was definitely a must today, although I did make myself run to get it :)

last wednesday

Maybe this topic has been done to death, but I really enjoy reading other blogger’s “day in the life” posts, so I thought I’d do my own. Before I begin I need to say 2 things: 1) I picked a day at random, and it happened to be a non-running day. Maybe I should’ve done a running day, but I didn’t want to plan it out in advance because I wanted it to be a “real day” (if that makes sense). I didn’t want to plan a bunch of things just to put them in the blog. Anyway…2) I tend to get a bit long-winded because I rabbit-trail way too much, and I like to explain things. I’m already doing it here by explaining how I like to explain. Just know this post will be a bit long…sorry for those of you who don’t like to read a lot.

Here we go…

6:00am – Like I said this was not a running day, so T was my alarm clock. He wasn’t crying, so I let him jabber on in his room and I tried to finish the dream I was having.

7:00am – I finally crawl out of bed and get T up. I change his diaper (which he protests because he wants to eat first) and then nurse him while I read some blogs on the iPad. Around 7:30 he’s done eating, so I let him crawl around his room while I finish reading. He rediscovers his excersaucer, so I put him in there to play while I work on breakfast.

At some point before he leaves for work, Paul changes T’s diaper. Usually we use pre-folds in the morning because T needs to be changed A LOT and we’ve had issues with our Fuzzibunz leaking in the morning. Today, though, we didn’t have a clean diaper cover, so I had put him in a cheap chinese diaper we bought on Ebay. Paul switched him to a Fuzzibun(z?) at this point.

8:00am(ish) – Paul has left for work and T and I eat our breakfast. My breakfast is the same every day: Over-easy egg “McMuffin” with cheddar cheese, yogurt with fruit (the fruit varies with the season), and homemade granola, and coffee (lots of coffee). Today T has nectarines, yogurt, and cinnamon oatmeal. We are slow eaters so breakfast take a while.

8:45am – I decide to rearrange and clean the sunroom so T won’t be tempted to pull on the computer cables. Then I set him in the pack’n'play while I try to clean up the kitchen. I get all the dishes washed but I have to leave his high chair and the floor for later because T is starting to get fussy.

9:00am(ish) – I take T to his room, change him, and nurse him. He is a long nurser, so I catch up on some blog reading (or Harry Potter) while he eats.

9:40am – I finally put a, now very sweaty, baby in his crib to nap. Then I putter around trying to decide if I should take a shower or do some housework. I decide that a shower is pointless because if I leave the house I will most likely be sweating or get rained on (there’s an 80% chance, but at the moment it looks cloudless and hot). I try to do something with my hair and ultimately decide that anyone who judges me based on my appearance can shove it. So I attempt to pull it back in a tiny ponytail, which takes more Bobby pins and effort than it’s probably worth, but at least it out of my face for once. Then I mess around on the blog a bit.

10:20am – I decide I should do some housework because T could wake up at any point, so I quickly change the litter box, switch the laundry from the washer to the drier, do my knee stretches, and finish cleaning up the kitchen. As I’m sweeping the kitchen floor I find 2 beads (bees?) and I have no idea where they came from. And yes, I am totally mentioning it so I can share that Arrested Development video.

Anyway…by the time all of this is done I realize there is no way we will make it to the library by 11:00 for the baby program. So I try to scramble our lunches (me: hummus & veggie sandwich, pickle, cherry tomatoes, port wine cheese spread, and crackers, T: brussel sprouts, variety of beans, carrots, squash, and turnips) together and call my friend to let her know we won’t be at the library, but will be able to eat lunch at the park or her house or whatever.

11:00am – I kill yet another black bug and swear up and down to myself how much I hate living in Iowa (I guess I should at least be happy we don’t have silverfish – I hate silverfish). The humidity is already starting to get to me at this point today too. I mess around with the blog while I wait for T to wake up.

11:45am – T wakes up. I quickly get him dressed and the stroller packed up. Then we head over to our friend’s house hoping to avoid the rain (it is cloudy at this point). Before we leave I have to stuff two diapers and throw his dirty ones in the wash. Unfortunately, we’re not out the door until 12:10pm.

12:20pm – My friend calls and has to cancel our plans, so T and I continue on towards the consignment store. I buy two dresses there.

12:50pm – The headband I am wearing gives me a huge headache, so I stop at a coffee shop for some caffeine. T makes friends with some old ladies while I wait for my iced chai.

1:00pm – We stop at the grocery store for a bell pepper and mushrooms. On the way home I listen to Twilight (my adult self is disappointed in my choice of literature, but my 16 year-old self is way into it). T blows raspberries while we walk.

1:30pm – We’re home, so I get T changed (he has leaked, so his clothes go in the laundry and I question whether we have the diapers on the correct setting). I change my clothes as the walk has made me sweat profusely (did I mention the humidity?).

1:45pm – I nurse T and email Paul to let him know he does not have to pick up the pepper or mushrooms. I catch up on some more reading while T finishes eating. I decide to take my hair down, as my headache has returned, and therefore look disheveled the rest of the day.

2:00pm – We (I) unpack our lunch and eat. Tobias glares at us during this because he’s trying to take a nap on a pile of bibs. T tries a pickle for the first time. Halfway through lunch I remember I needed to grab some enchiladas from the freezer, so I run to the garage to grab them.

2:20pm – T is done eating, so I hand him a spoon to play with while I finish eating (I am a really slow eater). Then he goes into the sunroom to play while I clean up the kitchen. I put on some music (Tom Petty Pandora). T likes it when I sing (badly) along to him.

2:45pm – I try to get some work done (organizing our budget, cleaning up my desk, etc) while T plays. This lasts about a minute before he has fallen over and needs to be comforted. Then 5 minutes after that he needs to be changed and is starting to get fussy, so I get him ready for a nap.

3:10pm – I am still nursing T when my mom calls. As soon as he finishes and is napping I call her back. Our conversation has me distracted, so the only thing I’m able to accomplish during it is switching the diapers from the washer to the drier.

4:00pm – After I get off the phone with my mom I finish up the things I wasn’t able to finish before T went down for his nap.

4:20pm – T starts to wake up, so I finish tidying up a bit, get him up, and change his diaper. Then he’s back to the sunroom while I work on putting a few things on Craigslist and respond to a few emails.

5:00pm – Craigslist screws up my internet connection, but I’m not sure what the problem is, so I have to shut down the computer. For a few minutes I feel like my left arm has been cut off.

5:15pm – Paul comes home from work and we play with T and talk about our day.

Cat photo-bomb!

5:40pm – Paul left his keys at work, so he heads back there to pick them up. I continue working on emails while T plays.

6:00pm – Paul comes back and I start working on dinner. Paul changes T. Then I nurse T.

6:25pm – I dropped the ball on getting dinner going on time, so it was taking longer than I planned. We decide we should do T’s bath before we eat dinner (if we want to eat together). Tonight Paul does his bath. I run downstairs to take care of the diapers in the drier, then check on dinner. Of course, the enchilada sauce was starting to stick to the pan.

6:35pm – Paul and T are done with the bath, so we give T a bit of naked time and I take a shower while Paul works on the sauce.

6:45pm – At this point I decide I’ve screwed up eating together as a family, so we decide to feed T his dinner (everything he didn’t finish for lunch plus green beans, avocado, cottage cheese, and a few bananas) and we would just eat our dinner after he’s in bed. I clean up the kitchen while he eats and Paul has a bit of work to do, so he works in the sunroom.

7:15pm – We had a bottle left over from the night before (Tuesday nights are Paul’s nights on baby duty, so we always have a bottle ready to go), so Paul changed his diaper (no pj’s, because, OMG the humidity), said “goodnight”, and put him to bed. I finished cleaning up the kitchen.

7:35pm – T isn’t totally asleep, but sleepy enough that he could fall asleep on his own, so Paul and I eat. Unfortunately, the enchiladas are a bit too spicy for Paul and he gets the hiccups (eventually I find a spicy spot and agree with him).

8:00pm – T is still not asleep and is now crying, so Paul heads back to his room to comfort/change/feed him. I clean up our dishes and have a piece of chocolate.

8:05pm – T is asleep and we cross our fingers that he stays that way until 6:00am.

8:15pm – Paul and I have been reading through the Harry Potter series (because, you know, we’re like 12) and watching the movies as I finish the books (Paul has already finished them). Side note: We’ve been watching the movies with Rifftracks and if you’ve never watched a movie this way, you should – it’s incredibly funny (made the first two Harry Potters much more bearable). We decided to start watching Order of the Phoenix (it will probably take 2-3 days for us to finish it). I sort the laundry and stuff diapers while we watch the move. Also, I started taking an online writing class that starts today, so I check into the class and figure out what the first assignment was.

8:30pm – That 80% chance of rain finally happened.

9:15pm – We head to bed. I have to get up early to run, so I’m not much good after 9:00pm.

So, there you have it – our entire day. Sorry the pictures aren’t the greatest – an iPhone and a wiggly baby aren’t the best combination for good pictures. :)

our day and a little blog.lovin

Today was a normal Wednesday. We went to the library for the baby program and played with all of T’s friends. Then we went to lunch and did a few errands.

{Wow, do I ever need a better phone, this 3G is killing me}

T. totally trooped through our errands, then passed out in the dressing room at Target. I bought him a book for being so well-behaved.

Now, I should be working on a few other things, but I’ve been busy going updating my blogroll and switching from Google Reader to Bloglovin. I’m getting a bit sick of the Reader because I like that I can get everything in one place, but I also like to see the blog I’m reading “in person”, if that makes sense.

Until later…

Check out Megan’s rad eggs!

friday confessions

Confession #1: I haven’t cleaned the house in a long time. A really long time. T. and I are going to spend our Friday getting the house cleaned because Grandma and Grandpa (my parents) are coming to visit next week for spring break. At least that’s the plan.

This may not look that messy to you, but it’s been driving me nuts for the past week.

Confession #2: I don’t read running blogs. I wish I could read running blogs, but almost every one I’ve tried to read I’ve hated. It’s super hypocritical of me to say that, since I write a running blog and all, and I apologize. It is one of my (many) faults.*

That being said, last night I found a running blog I actually like. It’s Cotton T Runners, written by Chelsea. It’s a relatively new blog, so I thought I’d give her a shout-out. I think she’s got a pretty good idea going on so be sure to check it out! (I don’t want to give it away, you’ll have to follow the link to find out :)

On his first walk in the stroller. He was so tiny back then! (Those overalls don’t even fit anymore!)

Confession #3: I’ve been too lazy to take T. out for a run in the jogging stroller :( However, these two ladies (S. and Ashley) have encouraged me to attempt a run with the stroller this weekend. I’m looking forward to that tomorrow!

That’s my weekend plan, what’s yours?

Note*: I try really hard to include a few non-running tidbits in each of my posts. I think what I find monotonous about running blogs is the “today I ran <this> far, it was <insert adjective> “, so I try to stay away from writing about that. A few of my early posts were like that, and I wasn’t happy with the direction the blog was going. Running is where I come up with a lot of my ideas for posts, so that is why my blog is centered around running. In no way do I think my blog is better than anyone else’s, I just had trouble finding similar blogs that I wanted to read, so I thought I’d write my own.

news, galore

There are a few new things happening that I’d like to draw your attention to!

1. I have updated the layout. I think it reflects a bit more of my personality and looks much fresher. The gray background was a little dreary, so I decided it was time for an update. The new layout should be easier to read, search, and is all around happier. Hopefully things will look a bit sunnier around here!

2. With the new layout, I have added a new dear kiddo page. This page will take you to my month-by-month T. updates, pictures, and video links. So, if you’re more interested in his stuff, head there. In general I’m hoping this will break up the “Today my run was <insert adjective>, here’s a picture of T.” monotony. I am currently working on the first few monthly updates there. Done! I’m also going to start a “memory monday” series. It should be fun!

3. You can now follow runbobbierun on Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest! Just follow the links below.

                                                                 Follow Me on Pinterest

4. Along with the new layout, I have updated my blogroll (on the right). I narrowed down the list to include the blogs I enjoy reading on a regular basis, which is why most of them aren’t running related. Like any other normal person, I have other interests besides running! I’d go crazy if that was all I thought about all day :)

5. Lastly, I am planning on posting new updates on Thursdays. This doesn’t really affect you as a reader, I just wanted to put that information out there so you will know when to expect updates. Currently, I blog whenever I feel like it, but I think this will be better all around!

That’s all for now…I have a 5K tomorrow, wish me luck!
